  • Dubai has some nice hotels and good beaches, but that is not enough for me. The truth is that Dubai is nothing but a shallow tourist destination. I wouldn't spend my time/money there.
  • I lived in Dubai for 6-months and I can tell you I dont think very highly of Dubai. Like nevets said it's a shallow tourist destination. There is nothing cultural to be found because everything is new. The wastage of water is insane and the arrogance of the locals is unbelievable. The worst I found however was the way people are treated in Dubai. The Indians, Srilankans and Pakistanis make more than 70% of the population in Dubai. They construct all the buildings and take care of all the work however their living conditions are appauling. In the hotel where I worked (5 star US hotel chain which has 3 hotels in Dubai) the housekeepers were being paid around $250 US per month, living with 5 other people in one appartment and more or less obliged to eat in the hotel cantine for financial reasons. Compare this to the $50 million the hotel makes in annual PROFITS and you can consider it modern slavery. These conditions were still good compared to the construction workers who get about $120 per month to work over 60 hours per week in the blistering heat and live with sometimes up to 30 people in a tiny room, sharing a bathroom with 60... When you consider this you feel like boycotting Dubai. I was living in sad conditions compared to European standards and working far more than my peers back in Europe, getting paid around $200 per month for 60 hour work weeks. Good; accomodation was paid as was food, but if I didn't have the support of my parents I couldn't have done anything in Dubai For tourists it may be nice, but underneath the surface there are a lot of human rights abuses and extreme exploitation of foreign workers. Read up on the internet and you will be a bit more critical when seeing all of Dubai's glamour. I know for sure that I will not be returning there because I simply do not want to take part in the exploitation going on there. And the last thing I want to do is pay US$500 for a hotel room for one night and know that the guy cleaning the room is living off US$4 per day...
  • someone told me this when i said how dubai is a huge construction site and land of exploitation: THEM: name some of your fave cities ME: chicago...new orleans THEM: OK! chicago..new orleans...think of new orleans when it was just 30 years old, as dubai is right now ME: [speechless/thinking...i did think of new orleans when it was just 30 years old, being that I'm familiar with its history...and the point was clear...it was an interesting point of view] THEM: all those awesome shops, clubs, cuisine, music, architecture, attitude/vibes that you love about new orleans have come about from it's hundreds of years old existence, and mind you, it was also built on the exploitation of others...most great cities have similar histories...dubai is a newborn city that will be great one day, so therefore, in its own twisted way, it's great now ME: [ still speechless...] i'm not an advocate for ANY city...just wanted share this very interesting point out....there are many Americans flocking to dubai to make $$ that they can NEVER EVER make in usa, and same for other nationalities all over the world...dubai DOES serve it's purpose, good AND terrible aspects involved peace to all!
  • hot and filled with Filipinos/Nepalis/Bangladeshis
  • beautifull country , full of nice people , hahaha all of us rich !! ;)
  • They like to build man-made islands there LOL. And it's really hot. And lots of people go to shop there. But I must admit, I don't know much else.
  • Fantastic place, and I love some of the imaginative architecture. Never been, unfortunately, so only know it second-hand.
  • ok listen to me well mr : bangladish , this is just for your own info , dubai is not just filled with filipinos and other Nationality , their so many local people so i think the guy jut asked a question what do you think about dubai , so no need to sy filled wih i dono what do you like anyone to talk about your country in this way i dont think your country is filled with so many vintage people so stop talking about dubai in this way its a first class country ;) !! regards !!
  • In places it is beautiful, most of the locals are warm and friendly, and the shopping was great! I got so much gold for SO CHEAP!!
  • Three decades ago, it was a small village with a few clay brick huts, a few dozen tents, and just one small water well ... now it is a huge city with huge skyscrapers and a very modern infrastructure ... it is high on my list of "next to visit" places ... I have already been to 28 countries ...
  • I think it is a huge excess and waste in the desert and sea. Those silly islands and what they are costing and doing to the ecology of the area are so superficial and vain, to me.
  • Meleggles , do you know that your country is silly and talk about dubai in this way i know why are you saying this thing because you are jealouise yu cant afford what dubai can hahaha !! ;)
  • A great city with some of the most wonderful buildings in the world! The Burj Dubai, which has yet to be finished, has become the world's tallest building. "It is thought Burj Dubai will eventually be 693m (2,275ft) tall." http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6910536.stm It's also in Dubai where you can find the world's only seven-star hotel: the Burj Al Arab Hotel. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15936989/
  • I was there in April and can say it is a true oasis in a desert with some amazing things happening and more coming. Currently 40% of the world's building cranes are located in Dubai and are building the world's biggest, world's largest...etc.
  • Its become really expensive now and the traffic is a killer. Still the best place to come to if you are a shopoholic.
  • I've been working in Dubai for the past year and quite frankly, there's more about it that ticks me off than makes me happy or gives me a cause to rave about it. To begin with, the public transport system must be among the worst in the world what with the taxi drivers and their careless attitude, their refusal to take you or just zooming past you without a care to stop depending on their whim and fancy.Oh yeah, and if you so happen to be anything but white skinned, then you are treated with even more blatant disregard not forgetting the fact that you have already probably waited over an hour in the first place to find an empty cab. Anyway, not being too dependent on comfort, my next resort is to try and get into a bus which turns out too be more of a farce. The buses are never on time, are infrequent and hardly ever go close to where your destination is. Besides that, if the bus happened to come by and its full (only 12 seats are reserved for the ladies) they are not allowed to have standing passengers, you'll be forced to wait another hour or more for the next bus. The next menace is the unending traffic snarls which is a regular feature, it seems like everyone's so busy launching all the biggest, best, tallest blah blah blah project or the other here and no one seems to pay any attention to the absolute lack of planning within the city. There seems to be little or no control over rash drivers who break rules causing loss of lives due to their sheer lack of caring.Parking is such a huge problem, people are invariably late because they can never seem to find a parking spot. And though the authorities have not really provisioned for adequate parking space, they are really adept at plugging you with a fine. Dubai- the so called tax free nation as it is called seems to be able to still empty your pockets what with sky rocketing rents, impossible number of driving tests before you get a license, salik ridden roads, high costs of living. The entire world is suffering under inflation costs and i understand that but this place takes the cake in ways and means of making money. And the poor lots who bear the brunt of it all are the middle and low income masses like the Indians,Filipinos,Pakistanis who make up a majority of the community and who leave their countries to earn a better living. Another bane if you happen to be a woman is having at least 3 guys at any time stopping their car or honking at you to get in with them, i mean are all women an easy target for the men in this country, can't a girl walk down the street without feeling threatened or cheap? Beats me.... On the positive side, i like that people stop their car and allow you to cross the street, i like the daily, Gulf News paper.I love the fresh food available at Spinney's. I like the malls and the shopping Outlets. If and when i do manage to get into the public buses, i like the comfort it affords you. I'm done with the moaning now, Dubai has its positive side too, but maybe my vision is just too clouded to see it...
