  • Depends on what line of work you do. I always try to remain possitive and focused on what ever problem they're encountering. I find that being helpful often takes the wind out of their sails and can calm them down.
  • Playing dumb helps. Let them feel like they're superior, until such time as they get a chance to make fools of themsevles.
  • Stay calm, be polite. If you can bring someone higher up than you to deal with them, do it. If they become offensive, ask them to leave. If you can compromise with them, do it.
  • With politeness and directness. Feel no qualms about calling over your manager if the person gets out of control. At least in this way you'll have a witness.
  • Do your very best not to take it personally. Keep reminding yourself that "it's not personal" even when they turn it that direction.
  • Duct tape.
  • Stay calm, listen, don't talk too much and once they've aired their grievance ask them directly "How do you want me to fix this?" Also, don't be afraid to apologize. You are apologizing for the company, not admitting an error that you did personally. If you personally did make an error then say "I'm sorry. You are right. How can I fix this for you?"
