  • Do you mean CONTROL or CONTROLLED -- different things. If an experimental setup is scientifically controlled, it means that there's an independent variable that can be manipulated or changed by the experimenter, along with a control group in which that variable is not changed. Thus you can tell if the outcomes are different between the experimental and control groups. Without the control group you can't be sure that the outcome is a by-product of the setup itself, unrelated to the variable you're changing. When you have an experimental setup and a control setup, the setup is said to be controlled.
