Question

Help answer this question below.

How exactly is a psychiatric assessment carried out? (ie: when someone murders someone else (or does a similar heavy crime) and are then sent to carry out a psychiatric assessment, to see if they're fit to stand trial for example). Any specific details?

It certainly appears that the reality is it's all a big money game for psychologists. Almost invariably, tho shrinks hired by the defense find the defendant incompetent to stand trial, to insane to know right from wrong. Meanwhile, those working for the prosecution study the same subject and invariably find that they did know right from wrong and should be held accountable.

To make matters worse, the questions asked are not so incredibly clever that an intelligent criminal can't see straight through them.

Don't put too much stock on that. Those shrinks don't give a rat's ass about the people they're supposed to assess and they do a real shitty job - half fast and best and filling in the blanks with anything they fancy

A psychiatric assessment is an evaluation carried out by a psychiatrist to determine whether or not a person is competent to stand trial. The psychiatrist asks the person questions to see if the person knows right from wrong, reality from fantasy, and whether or not they are sane or insane. The pyschiatrist is taught and trained for years before knowing what to ask and how to ask it.
