Most Males reach sexual maturity at about 12 to 14 months. However, while your interested party is obviously interested in breeding for COLOR with your male, there are other factors to be considered, especially with the dachshund breed.

Due to indiscriminate breeding, by some people, Dachshunds have developed some health problems, and of course most breeds with longer backs already HAVE inherent possibilities for specialized health challenges.

AS A RULE most responsible breeders wait until their Dog and Bitch is at least two year of age. Part of the reason for this is to assure that both ARE sexually mature, (especially the bitch), but even more importantly...there are some health certificates that you can not GET for your animal until they are about two years of age.

By the age of two, you pretty much know for sure if you are looking at a SHOW QUALITY or a PET QUALITY ANIMAL!

In addition to the interest in the color of your Dog...are EITHER OF YOU BOTHERING TO SHOW YOUR ANIMALS? Despite the presence of a desired COLOR, what other outstanding attributes does your Dog have to offer? Unless you are showing, you really cannot know the answer to this question. Showing lets your dog earn points and titles that PROCLAIM HIM TO BE OUTSTANDING, worthy of passing on his bloodline to IMPROVE this breed, otherwise, you are just hocking sperm based upon color and not necessarily doing anything but helping to put more puppies out in the world, where so many (including purebred) are put to sleep every single night.

Likewise...what about the bitch? Is she earning points and titles? What's her standing?

You already KNOW you have a desirable COLORED Dog...assuming you show and he does earn his titles..WHY WOULD YOU ALLOW HIM TO BE BRED TO AN UNTITLED BITCH?....You want the best bitch for your dog...he's half the formula! Breeding him to an untitled, connects him to a less than suitable breeding in the world of RESPONSIBLE BREEDERS.

These are things to consider, beyond...hey I'll give you $100 if you breed your dog to my Bitch!

Don't mate your pet. I know this will sound like the typical speech but there's THOUSANDS of animals in shelters. We have already adopted one cat and she's been great.

If this person wants a dashund tell them to search the shelters. There will be animals there that need homes. Don't perpetuate the problem by creating more animals.
