Question

Help answer this question below.

Why do clouds appear grey, when they appear white as we fly over them? Please give as much detail as possible, for I have seen a lone grey cloud, and the sun shining on it doesn't make sense, as the others were white.

Think about it a minute. Why do clouds appear white from above? It is because they are reflecting sunlight back up toward the sky. As they reflect this light back up, that is light that is not getting through the cloud and heading toward the ground. The thicker the cloud, the more light that is reflected up away from the surface. As less light gets through the cloud, the darker the underside will be.

As stated above its the reflection of light that gives them their color.
