  • There are actually called night "terrors." It is more common up until about age 16 but can happen at older ages. Night terrors are very different from the much more common nightmares, which occur during REM sleep. Night terrors are characterized by frequent and recurring episodes of intense fear during sleep. Boys and girls are equally affected by night terrors. This sleep "disorder" usually ends during adolescence. Good luck. If they continue or get worse, talk to your family doctor about them.
  • What you are referring to is often called sleep paralysis or night terror. They are caused by you drifting from REM sleep to bare consciousness while your body's chemicals which keep you from moving during sleep are still coursing through you. It is actually a fairly common thing. For more: Sleep Paralysis http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysis Night Terror http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_terror
