I read in Time Magazine that smoking began in 1409 in the Americas. The native Americans and indigenous people had an early form of prostitution where mild burns were found pleasurable. Without the use of modern kindling they used leaves sticks and other forms to ignite the hooker flames, which is the closest translation to modern english. Through this process they found that by burning specific things it created a sense of euphoria among the people present. The people understand that this was caused by the smoke inhalation, smoking was adapted as a way to increase the speed of this effect.
