Sharper or more defined lines or areas. I prefer chalk when I want a more fluffy look for things such as clouds or water. I use the pencils for more sketch type portraits, the coal for really dark or harsh lines, though I never use paints.

I think it depends upon which medium the artist prefers, and what they're doing at the time. Many opt for charcoal for quick sketches. Many choose chalk or pastels for the soft blending abilities. Others may want paint for more permanance, or just the way they can work with paints. Pencils, the same. Its all about choices and what you want out of the work.

Chalk is great for shadowing and blending color. Do you mean charcoal? Same. Shadowing and blending with charcoal is just easier for some. I used to love using both in school.

1. Sometimes you use what is available to you. 2. Sometimes you use what is what you prefer to work with. 3. Sometimes you want a certain effect. 4. Some picture themes call for certain mediums. 5. Cost is sometimes an issue. Oils are the most expensive and large canvases take much paint.
