  • I don't know about other states but in Arkansas you first have to take a written test, for Class A, a test over general knowledge, one on combination vehicles, and one on air brakes. You can also take a test for doubles and triples, one for tankers, and one for hazardous material. After passing the written part you have to have access to a truck to take the driving part which consists of a pre-trip inspection and driving around an obstacle course, and then driving on the highway. The written tests are pretty comprehensive and fairly difficult. The driving part is pretty simple if you have any experience with trailer trucks, but fairly difficult for a newbie. The pre-trip inspection is also difficult for some people. The State Police have training manuals that really help.
  • There are a few steps that you have to take to obtain a CDL License. Different states require different requirements, but usually there is a written test and an actual driving test. Another thing that many people do is attend truck driving school, or a training session for CDL Licenses. A good truck driving school can help you learn everything you need to know to pass the CDL test. Some schools are even certified to give the CDL test after you have completed their training course.
