It is the prelude to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. If I recall correctly it was written AFTER The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Because the other books were popular there was some interestin "Middle Earth" and I think it was meant to capitalize on that.

The first book or part actually became LOTR

I believe that Tolkien wrote the drafts of Silmarillion before LOTR or the Hobbit were ever published. Silmarillion recounts the humans settling of Middle Earth. It explores the stories of some of the elfish people pre-human. It also gives more history of 'the far shores'.

Its been probably twenty years since I read it, but if I remember correctly, it was the backstory for LOTR. It gave the history of the association between elves, men and dwarves, but it was primarily centered on the elves. The elves had unnaturally long lives, so many of them had been alive through the entirety of the history of men, if I'm remembering right. I believe Elrond had been at the battle during which Isuldur took the ring from Sauron, and remembered it, even though it had been many many generations before Aragorn.

The Silmarillion was the backstory for LOTR. There are things in the books that reference an older time and this book, which was completed by his son, is a compilation of those stories.
