Well, I'll take a stab at it. The defeat of the British Navy by the French at the Battle of Yorktown. This basically sealed the fate of the British defenders at Yorktown and ended the Revolutionary war, paving the way for the United States that we know today. Another one might be the decision of Confederate Cavalry General Jeb Stuart to reconnoiter a bit too far forward and a bit too recklessly during Lee's march into Pennsylvania. This put him on the wrong side of the Union forces and left Lee blind. The Union forces got to Gettysburg first and took over the good ground and that battle was the turning point of the Civil War. That battle hinged on two things: A confederate soldier had Col. Chamberlain of the 20th Maine in his sights and simply couldn't shoot him. Then Chamberlain led his troops on a bayonet charge which defeated the Confederate challenge to Little Round top and set the stage for the Lee's disastrous Pickett's Charge on the third day. History can turn on little things.

I cannot narrow down to one moment; however, what comes to mind for me is -the process beginning in 1807, which enforced a ban of the importation of slaves into the Union, -the end of the civil war, and finally -the passage of the 13th amendment: The Abolition of Slavery. This, of course, was not the end of racism in the US, but I consider it an awakening of awareness in the US. There is still a long way to go, here and everywhere.
