I don't think it accepted my answer yet so I will repeat. My mother taught me how to sew on a machine when I was eight, that was 40 odd years ago. I am very glad she took the time to teach me.

Go know thyself is THE RED QUEEN

    I taught myself.

I was afraid to use a sewing machine for years because I witnessed a needle go through a girls finger in home ec class in grade school. It was HORRIBLE!

Mostly the sound the machine made... Gross!

bagicide stayed 10 months too long

I had to take sewing in Home Ec in Junior High, but I failed it. I finally learned a few years ago by buying a dead-easy sewing machine and a couple of good books and struggling through a pattern and a simple project. When I got stuck, I went to my neighbors for help (they all sew). I kept tacking tougher and tougher projects. I've worked my way up through most of the Simplicity patterns. I've tackled some pretty tough Burda patterns and I'm starting to tackle McCall's. It isn't all that hard. Just don't tackle too many new skills in one pattern so that you get frustrated and give up.

  • I was taught some basics in first and second grade, and then taught myself the rest from the internet a couple of years ago.

Well, I dont know how most people learn. But I got a pattern that I liked and just went after it. It was not easy and it took me almost a year to make a dress. But I had fun and everyone like it.

If they tell you to start with curtins and work your way up. Don's sew what you like. You will have more fun that way.
