I just watched a show about the Holocaust. Why were/are Jewish people so hated and reviled by so many people, not just Germans?

I'm not claiming it didn't happen, but lets not forget that every kind of people has been mistreated the same at some point in time, but everyone seems to forget that. The holocaust stands out in everyone's memory.
