Help answer this question below.
You don't want a straight answer? :P I'm no vocal coach but I've heard a couple of things that might help. The important thing is always to relax and think about the sound coming from down in your stomach, let it resonate there rather than thinking of it in the back of your throat. Another idea is to try yawning and singing while you yawn. This isn't something to do while your performing (unless your voice is very tired in which case it can work wonders) but do it as an exercise every now and then and you will adopt better singing practice. Still my best advice though is to send from your belly and chest, I know it might seem difficult to know how to do this, but sometimes just relaxing and imagining the sound coming from lower down will help you to instinctively sing better.
Hope this helps. +3
Get a small tape/digital recorder so that you can listen to yourself.
Start the recorder and recite the alphabet twice
Take a deep breath pinch your nose closed and start to release it through your mouth. Push it out with your diaphram just like a bellows pumps air as opposed to using your ribs. You'll know you're using your diaphram because your stomach will be moving in and out (put your hand on your tummy you'll see what I mean.
Let your vocal cords begin to work so that you're just setting there saying AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
Now without making any change in the AHH sound start to move your mouth and lips and recite the alphabet.
The only sounds that should come through your nose are "M" and "N" Practice this in monotone. As you begin to get the feel of it then begin to include voice inflections up and down. Experiment with the shape of your mouth then add teeth lips and toungue. You want your voice to come out of your mouth.
Do this thirty minutes a day listening to yourself as you go.
Once you get the alphabet down then do this reading something. Start with childrens books they're loaded with monosyllables
Unless you have trouble with adnoids or sinus structure you CAN teach yourself to do this.
I have the same problem and I am trying to fix it too! lol, so I don't have much of a big answer. But, one thing I've been told to do, when practicing, is plugging your nose and try not to get that real nasally sound, but sing all through your mouth and get a nice round sound.
Good luck!
start humming. where does the sound go...through your nose or out your mouth. it has to do with the placement of your tongue. and also being consciously aware of how you are speaking.
Honey... You are SUPPOSED to sing through your nose.
THe reason why some people can sing and some can't is because some of us are that way naturally.
When you open your mouth to sing... The sound is being molded and the air is being directed through the mouth... But the sound comes out of your nose and resonates from the top of your skull.
I love Listerine breath strips. They completely open your sinuses, when you breathe better you don't have quite the urge to sing through your nose (or sound like you're singing through your nose) You might also try Vicks vapo rub and just dab a small amount under your nose/above your lip. So you breathe it in through your nose when you sing. When your passage ways are open your pallet is lifted giving you that nice resonating sound.
