  • To step up or down the voltage.
  • A tertiary means third so a tertiary winding is a third winding in a transformer. The third winding obeys the same Volts/Per Turn law as the second winding obeys. The number of turns on the tertiary can be designed to provide another output voltage at a different value than the output voltage for which the secondary is designed. Or, if the tertiary winding has the same number of turns as the secondary, it can be used to obtain an approximate value of the secondary voltage for the purpose of providing feedback into control circuitry for the primary voltage, thereby, allowing regulation of the voltage on the secondary while maintaining primary-to-secondary isolation.
