Paint your wagon red.

Take a digital photograph of yourself, invert the colors in paint or photoshop, and then paint what it looks like. Display the painting next to a white wall or sheet of paper and stare at the painting for thirty seconds and then look at the sheet. The afterimage will be naturally colored. I've done this before and it's pretty neat.

Have a look at some of the avatars on here. Copy and paste them to a paint or MS Word program. Print out the picture and use it a as a "design template" for your picture. If you expand the picture before you print it then it will lose resolution but in a lot of cases by doing that it will almost give you a "painting by numbers" for the brush strokes and colors. Add a bit of personal flair and there you go. There's an example of using the method that I did and the original avatar picture.
