Why does coke or pepsi advertise as much as they do? Is there really anyone that doesn't know coke or pepsi? They must spend zillions of dollars on advertising...

Because they are at a sales level where their sales go down when their advertising drops.

advertising does not serve the purpose of telling us about the product. How much do either of their commercials actually tell us about their products? It is all about continual awareness in a society with a short attention span. I look at numbers every week because of my line of work that show me that advertising makes a huge difference.
