A sin against society is a sin against God too.

"Let fornication and uncleanness of every sort or greediness not even be mentioned among you, just as it befits holy people; neither shameful conduct nor foolish talking nor obscene jesting, things which are not becoming."--Ephesians 5:3, 4.

The fact is, the user of obscene speech is corrupting himself. And he is spreading the decay to others each time he repeats obscenities. With good reason, therefore, the Bible counsels: "But now really put them all away from you, wrath, anger, badness, abusive speech, and obscene talk out of your mouth." "Let a rotten saying not proceed out of your mouth." (Colossians 3:8; Ephesians 4:29) Also, it urges: "Put away all filthiness." (James 1:21) To go contrary to this counsel results in God’s displeasure.

vulgarity can differ from era to era, and society to society. what is vulgar to us, may not have been in the 1600s. It is said that Luther was quite vulgar, but that may be by our terms. All the Scriptures say in Philippians 4:8 is -

Whatever is good, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, think about such things...
Our minds should be constantly being transformed by the Holy Spirit, into the mind of Christ.

Neither. Vulgarity debases the character of the person who expresses it.

Considering who is asking, I'd say a vulgarity is just another political statement used as an attempt to challenge others way of thinking.

I don't think it's a sin against anything. You can say whatever you want. Most "vulgar" words aren't that bad anyway. Just ask someone why they think a certain word is bad. They will respond "because it's a BAD word!" I don't know why it's bad, so I ignore them.

If the vulgarity is directed at someone then it is a sin against God and a slap in the face of society. Crass and vulgar behavior is never acceptable, or at least shouldn't be, in our society. Vulgarity can come in many different forms, from a simple cuss word to pornography and physical abuse. All of which are abominations that this country reeks of.

Treating others as you would want to be treated is always the best course of action. Vulgarity is a tool of a weak mind.

    Good question!
    Its both.

Usually the intent expressed by the vulgar words reflect a heart that is impure toward God and often one's neighbor. Not just the meaning but the heart intent of using an expletive is the sin against God.

Consider Matthew 5:18-20 (NLT). Jesus speaking:
"But the words you speak come from the heart—that’s what defiles you. For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander. These are what defile you. Eating with unwashed hands will never defile you.”
