The picture of my TV takes forever (5+ minutes) to come on after powering up the TV. Sound comes on immediately. Once the picture comes on, it looks fine. The TV is 7 years old. What's the problem and is it worth repairing?

There are 2 things first it could be the tv tube,
    cathode ray tube (crt)
what happens is the tube hearter produce carbon which lines the tube guns.
and because of this it takes time for the emmisions to reach operating temperature.
if someone can boost the tube or clean the guns this should fix this.
Note doing this could lower the life of the tube....
as boosting a tube burns off the carbon with a high voltage and also burns off some of the coating too.
    tube booster is specialized equipment..
if some one has one it will cost around £5.00

it also could be a capaciitor fault ( most unlikley as you have sound as soon as you turn on.
the other option is get the tube re-gunned cost around £80.00 which is like having a new tube..
but at that price better getting a new t.v

Doubtful it is worth fixing. Sounds like a tube issue. A 7 year old TV is worth very little.

There could be several reasons for the delayed turn on. Most of the time it is found that plastic base of CRT neck is faulty. try replacing the same.

it sounds to me like its the tube. and honestly after parts and labor, it would be a much better investment to invest in a lcd or plasma tv then waste time and money on your tv that is already 7 years old. often times once something goes wrong once, the same problem will continue to go wrong even when repaired.

Try replacing the CRT neck base(plastic part). There are some spark gaps in the base. Non fuctioning of these leads to above problem.

It could just be that the semiconductor inside the TV, which basically controls everything inside, needs replacing....check out iTekParts.com for great parts.

WOW! My tv does the exact same thing. Yesterday it took 45 min. for the picture to come on fully. Now I just leave it on all the time. Waste of electricity, I know, but I really don't want to get up 45min. early to watch the news before work!
