What exactly did van Gogh cut off?

    Hmm.. difficult one. It is widely thought that he cut off his ear - or, the lower part of his left ear - just the ear lobe really. However, two German art historians have come to the conclusion that it was not van Gogh, but Gaugin who did the slicing - in a fight. http://www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/2009/may/04/vincent-van-gogh-ear
    If that is the case, then this question could be answered by saying that van Gogh cut off most of his family, especially after that incident when he fell in love with his cousin.
    Or maybe he cut off his supply of art materials by running out of money.
    Or indeed, cut off his friends by moving to France.
    I suppose there are many things that he cut off... but as for his life, that was definitey cut short.
