Question

Help answer this question below.

I have a 350 engine in my Chevy truck. Last time I drove it I was going about 70 mph down the highway and it started knocking real bad. I never lost any power, just knocks real loud. Could it be a bad oil pump?

It would take someone who knows such things better than I, actually listening to and examining your engine in person, to give you any kind of reliable diagnosis.

However, based on your description, my first guess would be that you have a “rod knock”.  This means that one of the bearings that joins a connecting rod to the camshaft is beginning to fail.  This kind of failure is very noisy, and you have noticed, but usually does not otherwise have a noticeable effect on performance — that is, until it fails completely; at which point your engine will be instantly converted into a very expensive piece of scrap metal.

There's no way of knowing how long your engine will last with this condition.  You might be able to continue driving it like this for years; or it may self-destruct the very next time you try to start it.

Oil pump won't cause knock. It is a problem with the combustion. Try a higher octane gas. In addition, make sure that the distributer is in good shape the timing is correct.

Does it only happen above 70 or at all speeds?
