Same thing with what @Stepper said but something to add to that is a processor socket will also tell you what kind of processors can fit into that socket or slot(legacy) and whether it's getting the right voltage. An example is socket 775 which can support the Celeron, Celeron D, Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Extreme, Core 2 Quad, etc. Hopefully that helps.
A processor socket is the junction point between the pins "input and output terminals" on a processor, and the circuits on the motherboard they will be sending data to, and recieving it from.
It similar to a wall "socket" being the junstion point between the wires in your wall, and the wires that lead to your house fan motor.
considering that CPU's are far more complex however, they require the connection of far more wires, to a much greater number of ciruits.
Lightning struck near my house last night causing my accidentally plugged in laptop to spark at the place where it was plugged in. the laptop works but refuses to charge. Is this an internal problem or a problem with the power cord?

When I use My Laptop (IBM T40) it goes all FRIZZ! So I have to turn it off by pressing the power button!Why My Laptop goes Frizz?

On my x50z asus laptop i had to press power s/w tens of times sometimes three imes and some other times from first time to get my laptop on,bearing in mind that it actsthe same thing when i use express gate s/w which means that the problem is away from po
