Is it necessary to clean dvd players? I was under the impression since they are laser, that there was nothing to clean.

    I take it that you have NEVER had a dirty window Including your car windshield) in your life either then.

    You do need to clean them occasionally. Even a small speck of dust can throw them off enough to not be able to read properly. Remember, the things that it is reading (light and dark spots on a DVD) are smaller than a speck of dust.

    To get an idea of what dust can do to a DVD player, hold your hand about two feet directly in front of your face. Now look around the room and see how much you can't see.
