  • Rasputin was a strange man who worked his way into the confidence of the Russian royal family, the Romanovs. Apparently he had skills at hypnosis and was able to help the hemophiliac heir to the throne to stop bleeding. He claimed to have mystical powers and was roundly hated by the usual royal in-crowd due to his interfering in court politics and his perceived influence over the czarina. They murdered him by poisoning, shooting, clubbing and drowning. Legend has it that they had to keep at it quite a while. His name suggests someone with creepy influence over people in power, so he was notorious rather than famous, I'd say.
