That was not appropriate at all. I am a supervisor and an Operations Manager with several people that report to me. I have NEVER denied anyone having to take time off for family emergencies or family functions. Family is and should be your priority. Your boss is being an ass to put it bluntly. I've found that if you respect your employees and respect the fact that they have lives outside of work, they will work harder and be better and happier employees. If you have a chance to transfer to another department or find another job, I would highly suggest it. There is no reason to put up with a boss that bullies you like this. One other thing, your job may be protected under the FMLA. Family Medical Leave Act.
Yes. I understand you love your mother. But your boss has to run a business, which a lot of employees depend on as their livelihood. If you asked your boss before booking, I am sure he would have let you go because he would have had time to replace you while you're gone.
To add more detail - the day that I told my boss that I had to fly to the Philippines because my mother is dying was one week before the actual flight. Granted I know that 1 week isn't a lot of time, but still, I didn't anticipate my mom dying...this boss cannot be for real. I wanted to walk out of there crying. I don't know who's wrong - me for only letting her know 1 week in advance, or her for threatening to fire me because of not giving her enough notice.

You're reading My mom in the Philippines got put on life support. I have to fly there and be there for a few weeks. Let my job know the day after I booked the flight, and boss yelled at me that I didn't let them know in time. Was that appropriate?
