  • Cats never forget mistreatment. They remember the person whose hand they suffered at for their entire lives.
  • I believe that they do, but how much is cognitive understanding and how much is a learned reflex is tough to guage. (Since the pesky little critters refuse to talk.) I have two cats, both from rescue organizations. The male cat, Gus, had been mistreated. I don't know the specifics, but everytime I put my face too close to his (like 2 feet away or less), he'd run away. After four years, about six months ago, he woke me up in the morning sitting on my chest and bumping his nose up against mine. Demanding breakfast, of course -- he's a cat. I don't know if he "remembers" the abuse he was subject to before, and has just decided to trust me, or if he's forgotten what happened before. Hard to tell.
  • Funny how the first two answers, like mine, zoom right in on mistreatment. My dad's cat has an AMAZING constellation of complexes and neuroses, and they're too specific for him to have been born that way. Some dog must have tried to eat him for lunch when he was, according to my mom, "out on the road" before the Humane Society got him. (I always picture him with a pack and stick, hobo-style.) A 26-lb cat capable of having flashbacks & freaking out can be quite dangerous, so he's definitely a special needs sweetie-pie. He also has definite abandonment issues. In fact, he's been to a pet psychic, who conjured images of the kinds of big mean dogs who used to bite him and not let him in the house. Although I never mentioned the dog or abandonment thing, I still guess she's just a pretty good pet psychologist instead of psychic. Anyway, of course the family's had him so long he doesn't remember his violent youth; it's all gut-level knee-jerk reaction, or else he'd have mellowed out after all these years in a loving family.
  • Do you want my personal opinion or my professional opinion as a wedding filmographer? because I believe the latter would be more humorous than my personal opinion but my personal opinion would be less fun than my professional opinion as a wedding filmographer of course if my personal opinion and my professional wedding filmographer opinion were to accidentally cross paths with each other you might get an opinion that actually means something in the opinion world...What's the word of the day? Opinion....
  • There is nothing wrong with their memory. They always remember where the food dish is located. The hard thing to do is teach them something they're not interested in learning. Once they learn a trick, they never forget it.
  • Oh I have a friend whose cats have learned to turn on the printer and make it scan... one drops in pens (we think it's to encourage it to print, since pens know how to write) they can type on the keyboard and know which key to hit to send a message.. one jumps up on the bar in the kitchen and reaches up to pull the string to turn on the ceiling fan... I'll spare you the rest... but it seems obvious they have learned something
  • Adult cats have approximately the brain of a two year old. They can feel, solve problems and remember. Just think of them as a perpetual two year old. That's what makes animal cruelty/neglect so horrible. They know what's happening and know they don't like it.
  • Our cats all have excellent memories but they have to care about something to remember it. They seem to remember the bad stuff far more readily than the good stuff.
  • Cats have a really good memory!! But uses it for what's important to them and what he/she regards as useful functions
  • Cats have a really good memory!! But uses it for what's important to them and what he/she regards as useful functions. Well, my cat remembers his head got stuk between a wall and closet Hes scared of small openings
  • Our cats say that they know everything, and not to try to put anything over on them or there will be dire consequences. They even write threats in their litter box, but cover them up if we go in to check on them.
