Help answer this question below.

I want to build a factory five mk3 roadster. i have to choose between 15 inch rims and 17 inch rims and i was wondering how this affects performance such as top speed, acceleration, ride quality, and cornering. Even if overall tire diameter is the same.

    you will also LOOSE power the bigger the rim, thats just more mass for the motor to spin, then again 17's are quite small by todays standards, is there a 16" option? It was good enough for Z28's back in the 80's =)

    If the tires have equal diameter the 15 inch rims will ride smoother due to more sidewall flex over bumps. The 17 inch rims will allow larger brake diameter which means better braking performance if you select larger brakes. The 17 inch rims are usually wider than 15 for the same diameter tire. If this is true of your choices then a larger contact patch is on the ground meaning better cornering and braking with the 17 inch rim.

    smaller profile tires will hurt ride quality but give slightly better steering response as there is less lateral instability due to bending sidewalls, but the bigger rims will look cooler and if road conditions in your area are OK, then the ride quality should not be too bad.
