Question

Help answer this question below.

Average assembly line worker: $40-50,000/yr
CEO salary: 6 figures or more
Does it make sense to lay off the workers, keeping in mind it's the job of the management to keep the company profitable and competitive?

i thought about this alot when the management of American Airlines forced their pilots and mechanics to take pay cuts and then rolled up to the Anatole Hotel in limos for the bankruptcy meetings.

Interesting question - actually at a company I used to work for, we had layoffs that included management. Now since I was in management, that scared the daylights out of me, but I was not let go. The people that were laid off were the lowest performers of our group, and a lot of their workers went too.

It's possible in any lay off situation that there are management people given pink slips - but it may only be one manager and 100 regular workers, so it's not as visible. Additionally, often management personnel are not unionized, so there isn't the added publicity from a loud union rep. But if they laid off the CEO, who would head the company?
