Well "I" didn't but both my brother (basically an only in the sense he was 7 years younger and all alone while the others were in school) did as did

my oldest grandaughter ( an only child)

my little brother (ah, now 41) had a friend named "awneee" and he played w/him ALL day long while I (and his older brothers) were at school)...lucky thing cuz our mother was manic depressive and if he wasn't "good and quiet" he was abused (always the "reason" I assumed he had an imaginary)

...my grandangel was "allowed by dumb daddy, my son" to see a movie overrated for her and then saw "monkeys" she was afraid of...tiny ones the size of toothpicks...we stopped it by telling her "no monkeys at grandma's house...monkeys need to wait outside"...etc....she eventually outgrew them, but before that she felt "sorry" for them being banned all the time and made friends w/them.

I only had an imaginary friend for a short time, probably from about age 3 to 6, roughly. My brother is a little over a year older than me, so he started going to school before me, and that made for some lonely days. The friend, who was much like my brother, was very present when my brother was at school and I was alone when I was about 3 up until I was old enough to start school. Off and on my brother would have days out at his school mate's houses, and my imaginary friend resurfaced to play with me then. Then my brother went away to boarding school a year before I did, and the friend came back out to play.
For the most part my imaginary friend, Edward (named after my teddy bear) was identical to my brother with the exception that Edward didn't pick on me as much, and he didn't ever tell me that my ideas were silly. The major difference was that I imagined Edward to be about the same size as my brother, but the features were much different. My brother has dark brown hair and bright green eyes, Edward had red hair and blue eyes. Edward often wore a suit as well, though I don't know why.
