I say the 8-1-2 record.
In baseball and in football.
It comes down to winning percentage.
In MLB - there are no ties.
In the NFL in 2008, the Eagles got ripped in the press when they "only tied" the Bengals, but that tie is what got them into the playoffs over 4 other teams.
I say 8-1-2.
Win = better than the other team
Tie = as good as the other team
Lose = not as good as the other team
Using that kind of thinking, one loss and two ties is definitely better than three losses.
It does comes down to percentages; based on percentage of games won the 9-3 team has a better record. The "better" team can only be determined through head-to-head competition.
A 9-3 team has won 75% of games played. (9 / 12 = .75)
A 8-1-2 has won 73% (rounded up)of games played. (8 / 11 = .727272727272...)
