The original philosophy was that, “killers should be killed,” or the Biblical admonition, “an eye for an eye,” and the idea was that if a killer knew that he also faced death for killing, that maybe he would not kill, in the first place. But capital punishment was also used in the days of the Olde West, when you could be hanged for rape, cattle rustling, or horse stealing. The idea then, was the same that it is, today: A person can’t commit additional crimes, if they are dead.
