I wish I knew! It is very similar to when I am told that I am tall. Folk think they can point out how tall I am and then get offended when I suggest that they are short!

I think they may be paying you a compliment. It should be worded differently but generally I think commenting on someone's physical appearance is a very touchy thing to do. Most people want to be skinnier and taller so when people say things to you about that, it's because they envy you. Take it as a compliment. It's a little like the cashier commenting on your purchases. I'd rather they didn't, but I think they're just trying to make conversation so I try not to take offense.

I used to be pretty heavy and no one made any comments ... now I'm pretty thin and get so many comments about being too "skinny"! It's amazing. I would have thought it would be just the opposite. I think it's just difficult for some people to lose weight, they might be a bit jealous when they see someone who doesn't need to lose any.

If it makes you feel any better you are approximately 20 lbs overweight for a ballerina that height. You can tell them that. I would guess they think it's a complement to say that. +4

It is NOT acceptable, unless YOU have initiated a conversation about your weight. And then, such a rude and thoughtless comment would NEVER be acceptable under any circumstances. You are faced with incredibly rude and ignorant people in such a case.
