Why is it that whenever someone is sarcastic, people understand what they mean, but when I am they take it literally?

People don't like it when someone makes a joke and they don't get it, this is especially difficult to do with sarcasm, I suggest working on your non-verbal cues letting the person know when to laugh. It is a basic concept most stand-ups have to work with before gaining a crowd following.

That's their problem. If you have to keep telling people "I'm just kidding"..their not worth your time.

Heh. Well if you don't at least attempt to appear sarcastic, it makes sense people would take it literal. All it really takes is a little smirk. Or, you know, you can just tell them that homey don't play that and that in the future they'll just have to accept it as sarcasm whether you appear sarcastic or not. Some people (not you) like to pretend they are sarcastic when actually deep down inside they know they are actually insulting someone.

Ahh get used to it. I have sen more wrinkled faces due to my sarcasm than most people see in a retirement home. It just comes with the territory. I laugh to myself and sometimes out loud when people take it literally. I think, wow - are they serious? LOL

Sarcasm and or subtle humor doesn't always translate well online. You have to be quite adept at phrasing your words so the reader can tell you're not serious. Then you have to consider that everyone's reading comprehension is different. You're bound to confuse or irritate somebody occasionally. If you're around long enough, it seems, people begin to recognize your style or your "flavor"; they can more readily tell if you're joking or not.

Its becuase you are so good at sarcasm. After seeing a couple of your answers I understood this, maybe some people just dont bother looking
