In most old photos (pre 1950) I have seen, ALL the men are wearing some type of hat- no matter the occassion. When did that stop and why?

When JFK made his inauguration speech he was hatless; hat sales fell drastically after that. This is according to a show on how hollywood effects fashion. Undershirts went out of style when Clark Gabel took off his shirt in "It Happened One Night"(I think). It was a facinating show on the History Channel I believe.
