I suppose that it depends on what the monster is. There are fictional monsters and also monsters that are very real (like peadophiles, murderers and rapists). I suppose that what makes them fearful is that they kind of target basic human fears such as the fear of the unknown and the fact that they are inescapable. For me, it is even scarier when the monsters look more human like. I sometimes find that fictional monsters funny to look at rather than scary because I tell myself that they aren't real anyway! Besides..I suppose that Shrek is really a monster as he is a huge green ogre...but he does not scare me at all..in fact he is rather endearing!

Bloody fangs, pointy teeth, matted fur, red eyes, long horns, large muscles, slimy bodies, spiky tails, stinky breath, one lazy eye, hooked noses, stubby legs, deep growls, scary creaking....

that we are taught to fear them, there is no such thing as an instinct for fear, ALL fears are learned

if a parent's response to "there's a monster in my closet" was "let's see if he wants to come out and play" children wouldn't learn to be afraid of them

exaggerated humanoid features....things that are wrongly placed or too big, too long, deformed to be normal.
