Do you agree with Frank Herbert's observation in the Dune Chronicles that behind the mask of every liberal is an aristocrat and deep down a conservative is someone that would rather no future at all than change?

That's profound and probably very close to the truth. There should be some qualifications though. A liberal may be the make of the aristocrat but in the sense that he considers his people. A true aristocrat cares for his underlings and aspires to raise them to greatness.

As for the conservative quote, I completely agree. We've just experienced the conservative attempt to blow up our future.

I don't exactly remember the conservative part of the quote, but I seem to remember that it wasn't liberal is an aristocrat BUT revolutionary as an aristocrat, something like:

"scratch a revolutionary skin-deep and you will find a closet aristocrat"

but haven't been able to find the exact quote in any of his books. I think it was in "God Emperor of Dune". The point is that a revolutionary isn't necessarily a liberal, nor is a liberal always a revolutionary. Revolutions and revolutionaries swing both ways.
