The governor of Texas has mandated all 11 & 12 year old girls to be vaccinated against a sexually transmitted virus beginning in 2008. Should any government (state or federal)have the power to mandate in this way for our kids?

    No...No...No...

My 11 year old daughter will not be given it, if my state tries to mandate it I'll fight it all the way. I want the best things for my daughter. I want her to be healthy and protected, but I feel this vaccine is not safe. I've heard so many things regarding how they haven't tested it enough and how the child's age is a factor (your not even suppose to give most medicines even OTC medicines to children under 12). When there's more testing done, reliable info made available, and the child is older, at least 14, I'll weigh all the evidence and decide as a parent. I do not feel the government on any level has the power to mandate this decision for our children. Yes, I know other vaccines are required by the government for school, travel, a job and enlistment in the armed forces, but these vaccines all had problems in the beginning, why rush things? My daughter will not be sexually active at 12, any child who is, needs more help and better guidance in life than this vaccine will provide.

I'd be shocked if the girls were physically forced to be injected if they tried to refuse. It raises the question of what they will do with the ones that refuse.

I don't think so. I'm all for vaccinating our kids and ourselves against any number of things but in this case I have a problem. My problem is that this vaccine is brand new. We have no idea what the long term effects of this vaccine may be, so why is everyone so ready to start giving it out to every young woman in the country? Remember the thalidomide drugs not so long ago and what happened as a result of that? Do we want another incident like that because we were in such a hurry to adopt this vaccine as some kind of savior?

Yes, I think the government is right to mandate vaccinations. They have been doing it for years for other diseases, but this one is different only because it's an STD.

The only part I have a problem with is that it does seem a little rushed, and I haven't heard that the research has been properly done, and they can give a little more information on the long term effects.
