No, a splitter will do you no good: there's only one output, only one logical "window" on which the computer can draw. What you need to do dual monitors is a second video card. Just buy an inexpensive card and plug it in. Nothing to it, as long as it has a driver for XP.

I'm not sure how they were configured but at work we have small form factor Dell PCs that only have one VGA output that use a splitter to go to two monitors. The desktop is extended and not duplicated so it can be done. I just can't explain how at the moment.
