handbells. theyve got a nice sound and theyre fun to play, but its not really a rockin & rollin kind of instrument. also, it would be a tall order for a single percussionist to play the handbells because each bell has a single tone obviously and it takes time to pick up, ring and then stop the sound. so theyre generally played by a group of people, each holding two bells ~ not ideal logistically for a rock band. you generally dont see people playing the handbells by striking them, except for bass notes ~ the sound is not much to write home about. lastly, its easy to get that particular sound on a synthesizer or a synth patch.
