How many butterflies do you think you would have to tether yourself to in order to take flight?

    Depends on the size of the butterflies. Take a butterfly the size of a small helicopter, and my answer would be .. just one! LoL

    This is crazy, I was having this exact conversation with some friends earlier (although with house flies rather than butterflies). Supposedly the flies struggle to even lift the thread they're tethered to, so it would be a lot

    The calculation for this would be quite complex.

    You would have to calculate the average uplift force for your chosen species of butterfly. You would then have to calculate the uplift force required to lift your human subject.

    However you would also have to tether the butterflies using a material that was light but with a high-tensile strength. You would have to take the weight of this into account with the calculations.

    My guess is you'd need a lot of butterflies. And the question is how do you actually tether them all. You'd have to lower their temperatures in a fridge to induce docility. And then you'd have to tether them all in their relatively short lifespan. And if there's, say, a million butterflies needing tethering, it would be very hard, impossible, to tether them yourself before they died.
