You're reading How much can I uprade my CPU? I have a Gateway 832GM with a Pentium 4-650/3GHZ, 3GB RAM, Intel SE91510J Motherboard and LA775 socket. Can I upgrade my processor to a Core 2 Duo and If not how much can I upgrade it? Would it be worth the investment?
Comments
Since I upgraded Windows XP to Vista my CPU activity in task manager has been maxing out. I cannot play videos and TV programs in Media Center as this pegs the CPU usage in Task Manager. I really do not want to purchase a new computer so I would like to know how far I can upgrade my existing CPU

He's gonna have to go to Gateway support and ask. That mobo may be an intel, but it's been custom made for gateway. There are no specs for it other than with gateway support. I'm kind surprised dp hasn't tried that first. It's the logical first step. He rated you down for your answer. I though it was appropriate to change that, so here's 5 pts.

I don't believe upgrading your CPU is going to solve your problem. What scubabob says is true. But IMHO, the cheapest, most effective way to get your performance back is to revert to XP. If you insist on Vista, you need to upgrade the whole package of hardware so that Vista will run with good performance. Your existing machine will not solve the problem, sorry.
