Question

Help answer this question below.

Our brand-new computer came pre-loaded with Vista, and now none of our peripherals work. Drivers aren't available. If I upgrade to Windows 7, will my printer and scanner work? What about if I take off the Vista and put on a fresh install of XP?

It is likely that XP will "revive" some of your peripherals. The Vista change to the driver system broke a lot of older peripherals, and Win7 is unlikely to repair them. If new drivers are not available now, it is unlikely that they will become avialable, so XP is your best hope.

Of what peripherals are you speaking? If it is an old parallel port scanner or maybe a 10-year old printer, then you need to replace these items as they have reached their end of life years ago. Printers and scanners are very inexpensive now and the new ones come with USB port interfaces and need very little in the way of driver support. It's doubtful that upgrading to Windows 7 will give you the driver support which you are seeking. It's better to upgrade your scanner and printer too so that everything works and works well.

The first question should be how old your printer and scanner are. They could be outdated and so could their drivers for Vista as well.

When I had Windows XP, it stopped recognizing my video game controller and my MP3 player, so I couldn't use them. I reinstalled XP multiple times but it still wouldn't recognize my stuff.

When I installed Windows 7 RC, it immediately recognized my stuff. I recommend installing Windows 7 RC and trying that out.
