Cable bandwidth varies from .5K - 20MB, but it's all a shared line from the group of houses you are around, so it may not be a complete 20MB at any given time. The internet backbone runs well above 10GB and is climbing each time they upgrade the network infrastructure.

Is it .5K - 20MB per sec? Is it really slower than the 56Mps internet connection speed of a computer?

Yes, it actually is slower. Only FiOS gets close to 100Mb/s that computers normally use in a LAN. The internet itself works at a much faster rate than 56Mb/s, but the WiFi & LAN cards connect thru the cable/DSL modem at the lower speeds. The higher speeds cost a lot more money and the phone and cable companies can't afford to be hooking everyone up at the higher speed because the technology just isn't there yet. Only FiOS offers 50Mb/s speeds at this time.
