It will be sometime in the future, but for now a hard-copy (ie. paper) is considered the polite option. This shows the recipient they are respected, because you put some time and effort into inviting them.
Another aspect is what type of activity they are being invited to. For example, if you are organising a girls 'sleepover' less than a week before the event, it is more practical to send an instant invitation (ie. e-mail) than via snail mail.
However, if it is a more formal and anticipated event that you may have been planning for months or years (like a wedding), then an e-mail would make the 'invited' feel like they were a last-minute consideration and they may be offended.

It's OK but not very special. Plus, in my experience email invites tend to get forwarded and you end up with A LOT more guests that you planned at your party!

    Ugh!

Although this is "okay," I am sick of only recieving bills through the mail and getting emails for invites! Nothing is better than being surprised by an actual, paper (yes, they still exist) invite! Really... send me a paper one and then set up an invite on evite for people to RSVP. Takes two seconds and adds a dash of personality.

Yes, though it is not as speacil or personal. Sending both through email and physical mail is smart, because they recieve the email first, and get the physical mail for a memory.

In addition to the traditional Snail Mail, yes, but not instead of.

There are some people who do not have access to email still, or may have only limited access, or only check it periodically. Not to mention people who do not quite understand the workings of their Spam filter and wind up losing half their emails they want, and keeping the stuff they want to filter.

I would use it as a follow up reminder to RSVP, but never as the sole communication.

I think not, but thats just me. We don't want to lose all our personal touches via email. Especially for a shower or wedding. Maybe a party would be okay, but it's so easy to ignore emails. lol
