Where did the phrase "drunk as cooter brown" come from? i have heard this all my life.

    Folklore has it that he had family on both sides during the Civil War and he didn't want to fight for either side. So he got drunk, stayed drunk throughout the war years, and was not drafted.

    Lil' Jimmy "Cooter" Brown was a real person. In the Tennessee hills where many illegal stills are part of the landscape, the cookers of good sour mash are supported by the locals who enjoy good "moonshine". When a batch was exceptionally good it was attributed that if it didn't make you go blind...it would make you drunker than "Old Cooter Brown"
