Hello everyone. What would be the BEST cell service/provider/plan for only international texting and calling? (Fiance is a U.S. soldier deployed abroad. We want to communicate everyday but it is VERY costly. Need solution ASAP.)

Hey Ravrr!! I've missed you! It's awesome to see you, and it's been entirely too long. I hope you've been doing well :D

I don't know the answer to your question. I'm sorry. I just wanted to drop a line to wish you well! You have a fiance? Congratulations!

Aw, thank you! Sadly, I still may not be on here often, but I have missed answerbag. This last year I've been concentrating on school. UCLA student... But once in a while I have a question like this one that I think only ABers will have good answers to. As for my relationship, we are committed to each other but we truly dont have a wedding date in mind at all - I'd like to finish my education first and then we'll go from there... The distance is difficult and the war death tolls of U.S. soldiers is frightening, but for now I am optimistic about life and love

Optimism is a wonderful thing... I wish you both total happiness and safety... and I am only sorry i didn't have a more direct answer to this... I just wanted to say hi! Good luck with school - you are very smart to have your priorities in order and not use AB as the great procrastination tool it can be!!!!

This isn't a smart-aleck answer, so please don't take it as one.

The best advice I was given, when I entered the USAF in 1968, was, "Make sure your 'best friends' are in the Signal Corps."

The Signal Corps is composed of soldiers who have total control of all COMMUNICATIONS, and they know how (for their friends and the top brass) to place FREE PHONE CALLS anywhere on Earth.

If your fiancé has "connections" (no pun intended) with any of THEM, he can call you often, and it would be FREE, for BOTH of you.

Also, you can use "MARS," which is the "Military Affiliate Radio System" utilizing the Amateur ("Ham") Radio Service frequencies to keep loved ones "in touch."

What happens is, a "Ham" radio operator in the country where your fiancé is stationed, contacts another "Ham" radio operator in your city, and that one calls you and routes the 2-way radio conversation over the telephone lines to you.

In such a set-up, you must remember to always say "OVER," when you are done speaking, so switches can be thrown and you can hear the other person speaking. When he says "OVER," it is your turn to talk.

It's cumbersome, but it WORKS, and it is FREE.

Good luck!

lol i think your answer is by far the most confusing and probably least likely to happen but it is very interesting. i dont think we have any connetions to anyone controlling communications but i'll cross my fingers.

Before you discount it, ask your fiancé if what I am relating is truthful, and POSSIBLE.
You lose nothing by looking into and treating it as a very viable solution to your communication needs.
