Doesn't it seem that for years now, every new Supreme Court justice appointment has been "the most important decision in a generation"?

While it is an important decision & does have considerable impact the political & cultural life of Americans, the greatest impact in my opinion is on those who occupy the far right & left. Most Americans live in towards the center & are less impacted by Supreme Court decisions. Not that they have no effect, they are just less likely to impact most of our daily lives.

A generation is typically considered to be about 20 years or so. They do tend to come along a bit more frequently than that, but not by much.

So it's a bit of an overstatement, but not by much.
