I'm a former Canadian Navy Signalman. The rest of my family on my Mother's side is primarily British Army, save one cousin that is SAS doing a third tour in Basra.

  • Yes, I have worked with the military. I currently work for the Department of Defense. I have dated a few guys that are in the United States Air Force. I had 3 Uncles who fought in Vietnam, Great Grandfather in WW1, Grandfather in WW2 (to be fair, he was actually OSS and in the Navy as a Reservist and he was a pacifist). Et cetera. . . .Yes.

    Yes, I do

I am currently in the Australian Army, have been involved over the past 3 and a half years. I have been to many places, and seen many faces of different races.

I am the only in my family to be in the Australian Army. I have other relatives serving the American Military.

My paternal grandmother's family in New Zealand was heavily military. Her paternal line descended from Michael Murphy who served in Africa and India, before coming to NZ as part of the Fencibles, the defenders of Auckland during the Maori Wars of the 1840s and 50s. Other Fencibles in her family included another grandfather, William Sheehan, who was in India and was at the Battle of Lucknow, WIlliam Littledale (a great-grandfather) who was highly decorated, and James Anson, the last of his regiment to die in NZ. The Fencibles were some of the most heavily decorated regiments in the British Army because they werre mostly soldiers who had been invalided out of the army originally, having fought in many battles. They came to NZ with the promise of land for their families.
One other member of Nana's family arrived in NZ in 1837, as part of the aborted French attempt to claim NZ. His name was Thomas Davis, and he had served as a drummer boy at the Battle of Corunna in Spain, before eventually being transferred as a solider to Belgium, where he received the Waterloo Medal.
Yet another grandfather, William John Cave, arrived with his family in the 1870s. He had been in the Navy in the 1840s.
