His intentions, his feelings, and the way he looks at his past. For instance, if he looks into the past and remembers the people that wronged him with a feiry hate and the urge to take vengence, he is no longer a good creature, no matter how justified vengence may be. Now, if he looks into the past and sees the people that wronged him, and is sad and doesn't know what he did to deserve it, but eventually moves on with his life...then he's a good creature. Or, if he killed someone in his past, and he thinks back on it...if he chuckles and mutters, "serves the little punk right" then he is no longer a good creature. But if he looks back with regret, he's good. Note how I'm saying "not good" instead of evil. Hope I helped!
